As this New Year unfolds before us, we are eager to set ambitious goals and dream of new possibilities. Despite our best intentions, many of us—or perhaps most of us—have a little critical voice in our heads that often holds us back. This voice fills our minds with doubts and negativity. We've unintentionally cultivated this voice over the years, often without realizing it. Let’s stop nurturing that critical, mean, and obnoxious voice, and start growing a positive, beneficial, and kind inner voice instead.
Understanding Self-Talk
Self-talk is the internal dialogue that continuously runs through our minds. Anyone who has explored self-talk or read this newsletter likely knows this already, but it bears repeating. Our self-talk can be either beneficial or damaging. It can serve as a supportive coach or a harsh critic. Every single person on the planet experiences damaging self-talk at times. However, being able to recognize and reshape these thoughts is key to personal well-being and can greatly enhance your mental and overall health. Remember, you are not alone on this journey we call life. We all face challenges with our inner dialogue, even those who have been working on it for years. Some of us have just found tricks to help along the way.
Why Positive Self-Talk Matters
Let me clarify a common misunderstanding about positive—or as I prefer to call it, beneficial—self-talk. It’s not about ignoring reality or pasting on a fake smile, though there is some research about smiling that we can discuss later. It’s about changing the narrative in your mind, focusing on strengths and possibilities rather than beating yourself up over shortcomings.
How to Cultivate Positive Self-Talk
Awareness: I don’t recall being taught this in school or by adults when I was young. It’s not their fault; they weren't taught it either. But awareness is a major key. Begin by paying attention to your self-talk patterns. Notice them without judgment—just observe when the thoughts arise and in what situations they are the loudest and most negative.
Challenge and Reframe: When a negative thought surfaces, which it inevitably will, challenge its accuracy. Do you call yourself stupid? Challenge that with evidence that you aren’t. Think about things you’ve done that were smart—I promise we all have something. Did you graduate from school, go to college, excel at work, learn a new skill? Then you’re not stupid. Replace that inner dialogue with a beneficial statement that feels more supportive. If you struggle at first, that’s okay—just replace the thought with a more neutral statement.
Gratitude Practice: This is often talked about, but it’s important to mention because the more you practice it, the better you feel. That’s the most important part—feeling better, because feeling bad all the time is no fun and it’s painful! Regularly reflect on your strengths and achievements, no matter how small. Yes, you have them—I know you do! Celebrating these moments can foster a more positive self-view. Self-Compassion: You would likely never say the things to others that you say to yourself. Please learn to treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a friend. It’s often easier to be kind and compassionate toward others than to ourselves. I struggle with this too! Forgive your mistakes and appreciate your progress.
Consistency: Like any new thing we do, developing beneficial self-talk takes time and practice. Be patient and persistent. I have been working on it for years and still find things I say that need to be challenged and changed. Even if you change one little thing at a time, it’s still progress. Sometimes we are hurting and healing, and all we can do is take one step at a time. We may not have the strength to run a marathon, and that’s okay—just keep taking one step, and it will add up over time!
